How does my car battery work?

Your car battery is part of your vehicle’s starting and charging system. It converts and cycles chemical energy into mechanical energy to crank your car’s engine, feed the starter, and run your car’s accessories. When your car is running, the battery stays charged by the engine driving mechanical energy to your alternator which then feeds and recharges the battery. Simply put, your car battery does two main jobs:

The battery gets your car going:
The battery delivers power to the starter by converting chemical energy into electrical and mechanical energy. This gives your car the power it needs to start.

The battery keeps things going: The battery delivers just the right amount of energy to kick things off under the hood, but it also provides a steady stream of power (energy) to keep your engine running throughout your drive.
